Fire and Ice Holiday 5K

This year the Yorktown Volunteer Firefighter’s Association is joining the efforts already in place to provide healthy, enjoyable, family oriented experiences for our community. We are coordinating with the Town of Yorktown and the Yorktown Luminary Festival to provide another landmark event that our community can look forward to each year. It is our hope and desire that the “Fire and Ice Holiday 5k” can provide a fitness-oriented event that will provide us the resources to help many other individuals and families within our community throughout the year. The race this year will be held December 9th, 2017.
The Yorktown Volunteer Firefighter’s Association has seen amazing support from the community and sponsors in the past and we are hoping that this continues to shine through to this event. The Yorktown Volunteer Firefighter’s Association is the community outreach arm of the fire department comprised of all firefighters on our department. Each year the members of the fire department work on several projects that benefit our community by volunteering countless hours; and in many cases money to these causes. One example of these events is the Christmas families program which provides gifts to underprivileged youth that normally would not be able to receive gifts. These families in need are acquired from the Town along with pertinent information about the children and desired gifts. Firefighters then go out and purchase the gifts. Last year we were also able to begin a partnership with RAC Trykes, who build custom manufactured bicycles for disabled individuals. These trykes provide the ability for these individuals to be mobile in circumstances that might not normally allow this. In conjunction with these efforts the Association also works to take care of firefighters and their families in times of need. The Association will step in and provide meals and assistance in any way if a circumstance arises, such as being injured on a scene. Finally, the Association continually lends a hand to community based events such as being a sponsor for Yorktown Community Schools Golf Outing, Muncie Toys for Tots, and many other fire departments in our area.
This Year we are hoping to increase participation numbers. In the past two years we have experienced tremendous support and participation from out community. This year we strive to make this event even bigger. This 5K race/walk will begin and end at the Yorktown Fire Department. The race will take participants through Morrows Meadow along the White River and then past the Yorktown Schools. There will be a live band performing before, during, and after the race for your enjoyment. Not many races will begin like ours, we use artificial smoke machines to smoke out the starting lines simulating like you are running into a burning building.
